Sign along PA Route 144, Clinton County, noting the East Branch Swamp Natural Area of Sproul State Forest. The 186-acre natural area, spread out across a mountain basin, protects a wetland at the headwaters of the East Branch Big Run. Scattered stands of old-growth trees are found here—remnants of the virgin hemlock–white pine–northern hardwood forest that succumbed to logging and wildfires early in the last century. The many weathered, fire-blackened white pine stumps are enduring reminders of the logging era. The May 31, 1985, tornado outbreak destroyed some of the forest here. A loop hike via the orange-blazed Chuck Keiper Trail and a yellow-blazed side trail avoids the worst of the tornado blowdowns.
